How Coca-Cola Australia is working towards a world without waste

Coca Cola

As the largest beverage company in Australia, Coca-Cola knows better than anyone that the world has enough plastic! They are taking ownership and responsibility by driving change and leading the industry by example to reduce their carbon footprint and improve Coca-Cola’s sustainability initiatives.

One of the Coca-Cola waste reduction Initiatives is tackling plastic bottle waste. In January 2018 the global CEO, James Quincey, announced an industry-first goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells globally by 2030.

By being accountable Coca-Cola has recognised that plastic pollution is a big and complex issue for their industry and many others however, they have faced bigger challenges in the past and have found solutions.

While they are on the way to their 2030 goal they are also taking many other important sustainability steps along the way. Since the end of 2019 Coca-Cola Australia now make 7 out of 10 of their plastic bottles entirely out of recycled plastic. This means that 70% of their plastic bottle production is made from recycled plastic. In doing this they have reduced their new plastic consumption in Australia by 10,000 tonnes per year and increased their use of recycled plastic by 10,000 tonnes per year!

By increasing the demand for recycled plastic they are also supporting and stimulating recycling and refund schemes in a bid to keep their plastic bottles in a constant closed loop and out of our oceans or landfill.

Coca-Cola is working with many partners on initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their environmental sustainability. Here are a few more of their main priorities :
     – Cleaning up marine debris
     – Improving access to recycling in public places
     – Developing innovative solutions to recycle plastic waste.

Some of Coca-Cola’s non-profit partnerships include Keep Australia Beautiful, Ecobarge Clean Seas, AUSMAP, Coastcare, Citizen Blue, Plastic Collective and Envision Hands.

Coca-Cola chooses to lead from the front to address environmental issues. They will use the strength of their brands, the scale of their business, their partners and their resources to work toward a world without waste.
